CHAPTER 11
Despite the hot water bubbling around me, a shiver shook me. âHow did Emma know she saw her death if the images went by so fast?â
âWell,â my grandmother said as she wiped at a bead of sweat running down her hairline, âshe got an emotional sense from each image. The last one had such fear, grief, and finality, she knew it had to have been the last memory Isabella Blackthorn had experienced.â
âThatâs chilling.â I rubbed my arms to get rid of the goosebumps that formed on them. âI mean, how sad for Emma. She has to experience all the grief from these other peopleâs lives.â
âYes, and in a very personal way.â
âIt would be overwhelming. She has such an intimate connection with them, and they all had terrible tragedies. How did she stand it?â
âIt can be difficult. Self-care is important for psychic witches. She must learn how to deal with the grief she experiences as though itâs her own. Otherwise, it will smother her.â
âEmma must have been a really strong woman. And she started so young.â
âWell, we tend to be resilient in our younger age. But Emma, her mother, grandmother, aunt, all the female relatives, had significant strength.â
I shook my head. I couldnât stand it. âIâm not sure I could do it. She must have been really different.â
My grandmother arched an eyebrow at me. âI donât think thatâs true, Carly.â
âI do,â I said with a sharp laugh.
âNo. Youâve already been touched by your own tragedy, and youâre dealing with it every day. You are very strong.â
I pressed my lips together as the memory of my parentsâ deaths raced through my mind. âI guess.â
âDo not discount your strength, Carly. You are an exceptional young woman.â
I hoped the heat rising in my cheeks as I blushed could be mistaken for just being overheated by the hot tub. My grandmother seemed far more exceptional than I was. But it felt good thinking she thought so much of me.
I shifted around, letting the warm water swirl around me before I climbed up to sit on the edge of the tub, letting my legs dangle in the water. The cold water that had splashed out of the hot tub earlier sent another chill through me when I sat in it.
My grandmother climbed all the way out of the water, fanning herself. âIâm hot, too.â
âAnd Iâm hungry.â
She wrapped a towel around herself before she draped one over my shoulders. I nestled into it and scrambled to my feet.
âHungry?â Grandmother asked as she tucked one corner of the towel into the other to secure it. âYou shouldnât have raced through your dinner.â
âI would have eaten the same amount slow or fast.â
âNo,â she said with a chuckle, âyou said you didnât want dessert. I know thatâs because you wanted to get to the poolâ¦and the story.â
âI was full then. But now Iâm not.â
âI saw a few desserts on the room service menu,â Grandmother said as she slid her feet into her flip-flops. âWant to order something up and eat in our jammies while you hear a bit more about what Emma saw?â
My eyebrows shot up.
